Three dead in Israeli airstrike: Lebanon on alert!

Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, a deadly Israeli airstrike took place in Lebanon today, killing three people. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a “massive aggression” that takes the situation to a new phase. The incident occurred despite a previous ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, which only recently came into effect and is initially valid for 60 days. This ceasefire includes a Hezbollah withdrawal from the southern Lebanese border to the Litani River and the deployment of around 5,000 Lebanese soldiers in the area to ensure compliance with the agreement, as daily news reported.

The airstrike is seen as a breach of the ceasefire, with a Hezbollah lawmaker accusing Israel of endangering the peace through repeated violations. Israel, for its part, has announced that it will vigorously enforce the ceasefire. The Israeli army reported rocket fire from Lebanon, sparking additional concerns about stability in the region. As the conflict intensifies, the impact of the war in Gaza is also alarming. According to Hamas-controlled health authorities, more than 50,000 people, a third of whom were children and young people, died there. However, these figures cannot be independently verified and are considered credible by international organizations.

Political reactions and protests

The situation has sparked protests in Israel, where over 100,000 people have taken to the streets against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government. The protesters accuse the government of endangering the safety of Israeli hostages, who remain in danger since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which killed around 1,200 people. Hezbollah has fired rockets at Israel since the start of the war, leading to a renewed surge in rocket attacks from Lebanon and even Yemen in recent days, sparking additional concerns given the tense situation, such as ZDF reported.

The Lebanese army has recommended the return of civilians to the south of the country, although the situation remains unstable following the attack. UN observer missions have warned of the fragile situation at the border, while Lebanon's Prime Minister Salam warned of the possibility of a new war between Israel and Lebanon. The ceasefire remains fragile, and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has warned of consequences if Hezbollah violates it further. At the same time, there are reports of indirect talks between Israel and Hamas about a new ceasefire, but the number of Israeli hostages to be released remains a point of contention.
