Robbery in Vienna: Unknown man robs 10,000 euros from apartment!

An attack on a 30-year-old Viennese caused a stir on Saturday evening, August 23, 2025. According to reports from 5min.at, an unknown perpetrator knocked on the victim's door and forced his way into the apartment. After opening the door, the Viennese was beaten and robbed of his money, with the perpetrator stealing more than 10,000 euros. The victim suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for medical treatment. The police were contacted immediately after the incident and the investigation was taken over by the State Criminal Police Office.

The incident is part of a worrying trend in Vienna, with crime among young people increasing alarmingly. According to current advertising statistics published on heute.at, the total number of advertisements increased by 4.6% to 194,981 in 2024. What is particularly worrying is that 57.1% of the perpetrators come from abroad. There was also an increase in robbery crimes of 18.1%, which is also reflected in the increase from 1,180 to 1,394 cases. A significant increase of 10.9% in reported rapes was also recorded.

Focus on juvenile crime

The increasing juvenile crime cannot be overlooked. Particularly striking is the increase in suspects aged 10 to 14, whose number rose from 3,186 in 2023 to 5,066 in 2024. In all of 2024, 14,804 suspects under the age of 18 were reported, representing a 33% increase compared to the previous year. This raises the question of whether sufficient preventative measures are being taken in Vienna to counteract this development.

In order to overcome the challenges in the area of juvenile crime, the interdisciplinary working group “Child and Youth Crime” was founded in 2024. This group, led by Dieter Csefan, focuses in particular on underage intensive offenders who are often involved in violent conflicts. The police also reacted and founded the Youth Crime Task Force (EJK) in 2024 to systematically address this issue.

Social impacts and reactions

The increase in violence and crimes among young people in Vienna not only has an impact on the security situation, but also influences the social climate. Youth gangs are fighting for control in parks, while ethnically motivated conflicts between groups, particularly Syrians, Afghans and Chechens, are escalating with increasing frequency. This is further fueled by provocations and the circulation of videos on social media. Reumannplatz, for example, is designated as a weapons ban zone in order to counter increasing violence. Carrying weapons without a legitimate reason has been prohibited since March 30, 2024.

The police are often viewed as the enemy by youth gangs, which makes communication and interaction difficult. Violence has also increased in schools, with around 500 students being suspended each year for violent behavior and the number is rising. In order to break this cycle, projects were launched to support young perpetrators and a focus for 2025 was on the “Under18” program, which is intended to specifically support young people aged 12 and over. Further measures to prevent juvenile crime, such as plans to amend the Security Police Act, are being discussed.

The overall situation in Vienna calls for increased cooperation between the authorities and society in order to ensure security and effectively combat youth crime.
