South Tyrol relies on regional trains: Railjet-Bozen-Wien ends!
On September 12, 2025, the South Tyrolean state government decided not to continue the contract with the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) for the Railjet connection between Bozen and Vienna beyond 2026. This decision is considered strategically, since the releasing funds of around 4.85 million euros are to be used to optimize the local transport system in the region.
By leaving the contract, these funds can be targeted in public transport over the next three years. The focus is on improving the daily range of travel and increasing service quality for students, commuters and travelers. This procedure is intended to increase the reliability and safety of transport connections.
New regional trains from December 2026
From December 2026, new cross -border regional trains are planned every hour between South Tyrol and Innsbruck. These connections enable direct connection to Vienna, Munich and Zurich, which makes switching on the burner superfluous. The new model of the regional trains aims to offer more stable and better tailored services that take into account the needs of the daily passengers.
The Railjet connections have often been affected by delays and failures in recent years, which affected the satisfaction of the users. The state government hopes that this restructuring will improve public transport.
Responsibility for functioning public transport
State Councilor Daniel Alfreider underlines the government's responsibility to invest in functioning public transport. With the redesign of the offer, the state government is aiming to increase the quality of all local transport, which takes into account the regional needs and the influences of national traffic.
For users who have complaints or inquiries about the new regulations, the possibility is open to send them to the South Tyrolean Transportstructures AG (StA) via email or a complaint form. Important information for processing is the location, date, time, line number and direction of travel. The statutory period for answering is 30 days, but can be extended to up to 60 days in special cases. In the event of a late answer, there is also a right to compensation, depending on the duration of the delay.
Overall, this decision represents an important step towards a more efficient and user-friendly local transport system for South Tyrol. While the abolition of the railjet connection means a cut, the new range of regional trains could lead to a better connection and reliability in the long term.
