MCI Lienz starts with 20 students: New opportunities for the region!

On August 25, 2025, the Management Center Innsbruck (MCI) will start a new course offering in Lienz. Rector Andreas Altmann reports that 30 applications have been received for the new location, of which 20 applicants will take part in the start of the course on the banks of the Isel. Altmann is satisfied with the number of applications and is planning to expand the range of courses to offer more students the opportunity to acquire an academic education. Study operations at the MCI Lienz location begin at the beginning of September.

The expansion of the study offerings in Lienz is part of a larger initiative in which the MCI will receive a total of 71 new, federally funded study places. Of these, 16 are planned for the Lienz location, while the studies will continue in Innsbruck before the final semester takes place again in Lienz. This expansion is a sign of the increasing need for academic offerings in the region and is in line with recent developments in the Austrian education sector.

New study places and programs

The Austrian Ministry of Science has made the new study places available as part of an allocation of 800 federally funded study places from autumn 2025. The MCI receives a significant share, which strengthens the institution as part of the broader higher education landscape in Austria. The high proportion of new places is specifically intended for part-time courses of study. MCI Rector Altmann emphasizes that there is increasing demand in popular disciplines, and State Councilor for Science Cornelia Hagele sees the award as a vote of confidence in the academic quality of the MCI.

The new study places in Lienz complement a variety of disciplines offered at MCI. These include:

  • Biotechnology
  • Umwelt-, Verfahrens- & Energietechnik
  • Mechatronik, Design & Innovation
  • Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen
  • Medizin-, Gesundheits- & Sporttechnologie
  • Digital Business & Software Engineering
  • Soziale Arbeit
  • International Business & Management

When the cohort is fully expanded, 180 additional students are expected at MCI, increasing the total number of federally funded study places to 3,450.

Importance for the region

The news has also been received positively by the East Tyrol Chamber of Commerce. Michaela Hysek-Unterweger emphasizes the outstanding development created by the new study places in Lienz. This opens up new perspectives for academic careers for young people in the region and strengthens the local economy.

Overall, the developments at the MCI illustrate the dynamic situation in the field of higher education in Austria. Current statistics show that public universities account for almost 80% of all students, while technical colleges and other educational institutions also play an important role. University statistics and forecasts show that the educational offerings in Austria are being continually expanded in order to meet the changing requirements of the labor market and to offer young people the opportunity to successfully shape their educational path.

The start of the new course in Lienz is not only a milestone for the MCI, but also an important step towards future-oriented academic training in Austria.
