New playground and fun court: Wayerfeld relies on youth and community!
On August 26, 2025, a new playground and a fun court were ceremoniously opened in Wayerfeld. The new park offers a variety of attractions, including a balance track, a climbing and playhouse, and new seating. In addition, bicycle racks and loungers were installed to make the park even more attractive for visitors. At the opening, Mayor Martin Kulmer emphasized the importance of this investment for the city and pointed out that the expansion of public open spaces is of central importance not only for children, but also for the entire community. “The goal is to promote sport, games and community for young people,” says Kulmer.
The realization of the project was supported by funding from the state of Carinthia, which amounts to 45,000 euros. State Councilor Daniel Fellner emphasized the need to create spaces for young people and recognized the investment as essential for the future development of a more livable community. “It’s about investing in youth, in our future and in harmonious coexistence,” explained Fellner, underlining the long-term goals of urban development.
Growing importance of open spaces
The construction of modern playgrounds has become increasingly important in recent years, which is illustrated by various urban development projects throughout Austria. The 2020 lockdown has once again highlighted the value of public open spaces, including the design of sports fields and playgrounds. However, the design quality of such places is often not given sufficient attention, as mentioned in an article in the German Architects' Journal. Best practice models, such as the “alla hopp!” facilities in Baden-Württemberg, show how exercise, sport and play can be successfully combined with well-thought-out open space design.
The design of playgrounds should be based on the current needs of the population. Attractive designs that work with different materials such as wood and metal are designed for all ages and offer a variety of opportunities for play and relaxation. Modern playgrounds increasingly take into account the involvement of children, young people and parents in the planning process in order to be able to respond precisely to the needs of the users, and the importance of participation is also emphasized in this context.
Quality criteria and safety
An important concern when designing new venues is safety. Operators must carry out regular inspections and ensure the maintenance of the systems. Documentation of inspections carried out is essential to maintain safety standards and clarify liability issues in the event of accidents. In Austria, the legal framework varies and there are different standards that must be observed when planning and implementing playgrounds.
In summary, it can be said that the creation and design of playgrounds like the one in Wayerfeld not only represents a stimulating investment in the future of children and young people, but also has a positive influence on the entire community. An attractive, safe and usable environment is crucial for combining sports, games and social activities.
