Heating oil alarm in Lambach: Great danger from sewerage leaks!

On August 28, 2025, in Lambach, Upper Austria, there was a considerable oil leak, which called the fire brigade and the police on the scene. The incident was classified as a "oil exit" after a technical defect had occurred during disassembly of an old heating oil tank. Unplanned heating oil came into the sewage system, which immediately required an alarm of the emergency services. The fire brigade reacted promptly and sealed the channel in the area of the subsequent shaft to prevent the heating oil from spreading further. In addition, a suction truck was requested to control the situation. Urmannstrasse was closed during the work to ensure the safety of the emergency services and the smooth running of the measures.

The fire brigade successfully completed its commitment after sealing. However, further measures are required, which are carried out by the responsible employees and specialist companies. The incident in Lambach once again throws a light on the dangers associated with disassembly and handling of heating oil.

Of leaks and challenges

The fire brigade in Traunreut was alerted before, on January 18, 2025, due to a heating oil outlet. A leak in the oil production line of a floor heating was responsible. In this incident, there were about 1,000 liters of heating oil, which led to property damage in the six -digit range. Fortunately, despite the extent of the incident, nobody was injured. Similar to Lambach, the strongly pronounced odor nuisance and oil leakage required extensive measures from around 35 emergency services both on the upper floor and on the basement. The first steps to contain the damage were initiated under respiratory protection, including the skimming of the oil from a drainage shaft.

The Traunreut fire brigade worked closely with representatives of the disaster protection and the regulatory office. The specialists used on site also checked the channel for oil residues, but could not find any acute need for action. Part of the affected semi -detached house had to be explained uninhabitably for the resident, which is why replacement accommodation was provided.

Previous incidents and their coping

Another significant use took place on April 5, 2023 in Wasbek, where a leaked IBC container with around 400 liters of heating oil led to an emergency. The Wasbek fire brigade was on site with eight emergency services and secured the site for over three hours. At this point the heating oil went out in drops and ran to the yard. The alarm led to an assignment in which rain inlets with binders were protected, among other things. After assessment by the police and the environmental service, the operation was successfully completed.

These incidents illustrate the risks associated with the handling of heating oil and the need for a prudent procedure for disassembly and handling of such systems. The fire brigade and the corresponding specialist authorities play a crucial role in minimizing both environmental damage and protecting the population.
