Erfurt Christmas market: Cannabis scent allowed, but with a warning!

The anticipation for the Erfurt Christmas market is growing! Soon the lights will shine and the enticing scent of mulled wine will fill the air. But this year, an unexpected whiff of cannabis may waft through the festive atmosphere. The city has made a clear announcement!

A nationwide ban on cannabis consumption at Christmas markets in Thuringia is not on the agenda. A spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior emphasized that the decision on such regulations rests with the municipal organizers. No special measures are planned for the Erfurt Christmas market, but the city administration has one important regulation in mind: the consumption of cannabis in the presence of minors is strictly prohibited. “The Christmas market is an experience for the whole family, and many visitors are under 18,” explained a city spokeswoman. Private security guards will carry out on-site inspections to ensure compliance with this regulation.

Cannabis ban on the Christmas market

The new cannabis law, which has been in force since April, prohibits consumption in the immediate vicinity of minors. This applies not only to Christmas markets, but also in pedestrian zones from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. as well as in playgrounds, schools and other facilities for children and young people. The protection of the youngest is a top priority and the ban extends up to 100 meters as the crow flies from the entrances to these areas.
