Provocation on the Temple Mount: Ben-Gvir and lost control!

Israel's right-wing police minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has once again caused a stir by praying on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. In a post on Platform X, he announced that he would pray for the return of Israeli hostages and the victory of the Israeli armed forces. The Temple Mount, which has great religious significance for both Muslims and Jews, is under Muslim administration, with Jews permitted to visit but not pray on the site. Ben-Gvir apparently violates this rule several times, leading to strong reactions both domestically and internationally oe24.at reported.

Provocation despite the ban

During a recent visit to the Temple Mount, about 2,000 Jewish worshipers gathered as Ben-Gvir raised the Israeli flag and posted a video on X in which he spoke out against negotiations with Hamas. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was forced to publicly reprimand Ben-Gvir for circumventing existing agreements that prohibit Jews from praying at the holy site. Netanyahu made it clear that there is no “private policy” of any individual minister and that the entire government sets the policies on the Temple Mount, like tagesschau.de reported.

The international reaction was not long in coming. The Palestinian Authority called the visit an “unfounded provocation” that hurt the feelings of millions of Palestinians. Jordan also commented and described the action as “provocative”. It appears that the unstable situation around the Temple Mount remains a source of tension in the region, while Ben-Gvir repeatedly violates the existing rules that apply to the Temple Mount.
