Together against food poverty: Christmas initiative in Vienna

More and more people in Austria are affected by food poverty, a major problem today. A current study by the research institute “Gesundheit Österreich GmbH” shows that around twelve percent of the population suffers from these circumstances. This group is often forced to skip meals or resort to unhealthy, highly processed foods.

In order to draw attention to this urgent issue, the Samaritan Association of Vienna is launching its Christmas campaign “Armvent”. The campaign aims to collect donations to support the “Samariter-Kisterl” project, which provides people in need with healthy food and hygiene products. The official launch event recently took place in Vienna's Museumsquartier (MQ).

Great support for an important initiative

The initiative received prominent support from chamber actor Cornelius Obonya and cabaret artist Günther Paal, better known as “Gunkl”. They emphasize the need to raise awareness of the health consequences of poverty. “Poor food can also make you poorer,” explained Obonya, while Paal added that poverty can lead to physical and mental illness. These insights underscore the urgency of requesting donations for the initiative.

The “Samariter-Kisterl” is distributed to 600 people in need every month, including 300 boxes for families worth 60 euros each and 300 for individuals at 30 euros each. These boxes contain non-perishable food, hygiene items and fresh fruit and vegetables. In addition, recipes are included that are tailored to the respective content, says Daniela Offenbacher, the project manager.

The campaign is supported by a variety of activities, including large-format light projections on the facade of the Museum Quarter, which draw attention to the problem. On December 7th, a team from the Samaritan Association will collect donations directly on site.

Committed partners for an important cause

The Christmas campaign is carried out by the advertising agency “DMB.” designed, supported by renowned partners such as Wien Energie and Wiener Städtische Versicherung. The BRG Vienna III youth choir will also make musical contributions to enrich the campaign. The Samaritan Association of Vienna strongly appeals to everyone to get involved and take action against food poverty.

If you would like to get involved, you can find further information and opportunities for support on the Samaritan Association website: www.samariterwien.at/armvent. The “Samariter-Kisterl” project is a step in the right direction to raise awareness of the challenges that many people have to overcome every day.
