Naschmarkt becomes a green oasis: New Naschpark will be enthusiastic!

On September 5, 2025, a local inspection shows that the redesign of the Naschmarks in Vienna will be almost complete. At the center of the project is the transformation of the parking lot at the Kettenbrückengasse underground station into a green oasis. This new leisure area, also known as the "Naschpark", extends over 6,820 m² and comprises around 90 trees as well as a variety of shrubs and grasses. Both sections of the project are almost completed and the first tree planting has already been carried out, with planning city councilor Ulli Sima on site.

The completion of the Naschpark is expected to be completed by September 19, on the day a large neighboring festival is planned. The project, which was developed as part of an EU-wide ideas competition, aims to convert over 50 % of the previously paved parking space into a recreation room and place of encounter. The popular flea market remains during the work because the park is implemented on an unnecessary area.

Sustainability and citizen participation in focus

The Naschpark is part of a comprehensive plan to enhance the cityscape and improve the quality of life in the area. In this process, the City of Vienna pursued a clear strategy of citizen participation, which began in 2021 and in which nine competition winners ultimately developed a joint master plan. The official start of construction for the first phase of the redesign took place in October 2024, with the focus being on unsealing the part of the asphalt area west of Kettenbrückengasse located out of town.

The redesign of the Naschmarks goes hand in hand with an improvement in the city's ecological value. The decisive factor is the safe planting of the trees on an accompaniment that is about 100 years old. The new equipment of the park comprises a variety of plants and open spaces and is intended to offer an important contribution to urban biodiversity, which according to experts in resilience towards climatic challenges is of essential importance.

Financing and future plans

The overall project is within the time and budget framework of 27 million euros. After the opening of the Naschpark, a second construction phase will follow, in which the flea market area will be converted and the country party square will be upgraded. The renovation of the U4 tunnel sealing by Wiener Linien is planned for spring 2026 and should also go smoothly. During this construction work, flea and farmers market operations will continue to be possible.

In summary, the Naschpark project shows how modern urban planning can rely on ecological principles and social justice. Similar concepts for sustainable urbanization are very popular in many cities in Germany and stand for future -oriented urban development.
