HC Innsbruck: Confident in the challenge against Bozen

The mood in the HC Innsbruck (HCI) camp after their recent 2-1 win in Feldkirch couldn't be better. Head coach Jordan Smotherman was beaming as he explained: "It feels good to have won away from home for the first time. We worked hard for it all week." During practice weekend, Smotherman paid particular attention to the offense. The motto “Slices to the goal” ensured that the Sharks continually put pressure on the Pioneers’ goal.

Next Sunday, however, the HCI will face an unpleasant opponent. HCB Südtirol Alperia prevailed in the duel against the 99ers in Graz on Friday and took the lead in the table. With seven wins from eight games, the South Tyroleans show that they are serious title contenders. Their only defeat this season came at the beginning of October against Asiago with a clear loss of 2:8. In the following games, however, they were able to fight their way back to winning ways with victories in Fehervar, Laibach and Graz.

The challenge against the Foxes

HCB Südtirol is known for its defensive strength, and they don't seem to have lost anything this season either. In goalie Sam Harvey they have an outstanding keeper who further stabilizes the defense. They have also strengthened the offensive line by signing Braden Christoffer and Adam Helewka, who previously played at HCI. This means that the HCI faces a big challenge in its upcoming game in Bolzano.

Despite the strong opponent, the team from Innsbruck is optimistic. Player Valentin Ploner said: "We have learned from our two defeats in the pre-season. We have to accept the Foxes' tough game and use our system effectively." Garrett McFadden, who recently returned from injury and immediately recorded an assist, also emphasized the team's confidence: "We've seen that if we stick to our system and support each other on the ice, we can compete with any team."

The game between HCB Südtirol Alperia and HC TIWAG Innsbruck will take place on Sunday, October 20, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. in the Sparkasse Arena in Bolzano.
