Storm in Tyrol: fall trees, thousands without electricity!

In late Sunday afternoon, June 15, 2025, a violent thunderstorm in Tyrol brought the end of a heat wave and caused considerable damage in several communities. The fire brigades were strongly challenged due to the adverse weather conditions. In Baumkirchen, Innsbruck-Land district, a large tree fell on a residential building, luckily without injuries being complained of. The Baumkirchen volunteer fire brigade and the Hall fire brigade were in use to fix the damage. At the same time, fallen trees ensured various short -term roadblocks, including at the L297 at the industrial estate in Aschau and on the Götzener State Road (L 12) between Götzens and Völs.

A total of several trees were uprooted in the Oberland, and the fire brigade also had to intervene in other communities. The municipalities of Wörgl, Kirchbichl, Angath, Angerberg and Stummerberg were particularly affected, where several thousand people were without electricity at times. There was also smoke development in the Wörgl substation, which continued to complicate the situation. Fortunately, most of the power failures could be remedied after 6 p.m.

intensive fire brigade operations

The amount of missions triggered by the storm situation was impressive. In addition to the incidents in Baumkirchen and the other affected communities, Keller in Jenbach, Schwaz district, also had to be pumped out. Another incident occurred in Hatting, in which several roof tiles detached from a stadium roof. The fire brigades from Hatting and Telfs secured the rest with a turntable ladder to avert further dangers.

The weather -related incidents in Tyrol are in the context of a series of incredible weather events in Europe in 2023. This year there were already heavy rains, which led to floods in various regions. Lower Austria and Styria were particularly affected, where rivers occurred over the banks and caused considerable damage to property and evacuations. The extreme heat with temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius also increased the risk of forest fires and gave the people in the region a challenging time, which is now being burdened by the storm events.

In the face of this recurring weather phenomena, it is important for the population to be clear about possible severe weather warnings and the risks. In its current blog, the insurance company Allianz refers to the need to prepare for storms and take suitable precautions.
