Survey reveals: This is how the Austrians spend their free time in 2025!
On July 24, 2025, an important event for the presentation of survey results on leisure behavior in Austria is imminent. This is organized by the BAWAG Group in cooperation with the Austrian Alpine Association and the children's office at the University of Vienna. The survey was carried out under 1,000 people and deals with the satisfaction of the people with regard to their leisure activities and the financial aspects of the leisure activities. In addition, the use of outdoor activities is offered compared to digital and the connection between leisure and education.
The event will take place on July 29, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. in the APA press center, Laimgrubengasse 10, 1060 Vienna. Interested parties can register until July 28, 2025 at communications@bawaggroup.com. Participation is possible both on site and digitally. For more information there is a website available.
insights into leisure behavior
According to a survey that was carried out as part of the presentation, 95 percent of Austrians report that leisure is an important part of their lives. This makes it clear that leisure is not only a personal matter, but also an important economic factor in Austria. In 2020, domestic households spent around 16.4 billion euros on leisure activities, although this corresponds to a decline of 19.3 percent compared to the previous year, which is partly due to the effects of corona pandemic.
The number of employees in the leisure industry was around 20,200 on October 31, 2019, which shows how important this sector is for the Austrian economy. Special players are gambling and sporting goods. For example, the manufacturer Novomatic generated sales of around 1.7 billion euros in 2020. In leisure activities, media use such as phone calls, television and radio are the most common activities among the Austrians.
cross -generational leisure activities
The view of the leisure activities of different age groups is particularly exciting. In children between the ages of 6 and 10, playing outdoors (80 percent) and family activities (76 percent) dominate, while television consumption comes to 73 percent. Young people between the ages of 11 and 18, on the other hand, spend their free time mostly with friends (69 percent), followed by computer and smartphone use (67 or 63 percent).
Digitization has gained in importance in the corona crisis, especially the use of leisure activities, especially internet use. 35 percent of Austrians believe that digitization will have positive effects on their leisure activities, while 11 percent assess this negatively. In addition, surveys show that every fifth employee is willing to do without salary for more free time.
Overall, the upcoming event and the accompanying survey results illustrate the importance of leisure activities in today's society and the challenges that have to be mastered in order to promote balanced leisure behavior.
