Borg Lienz: Five students successfully pass their Latin exam!
On June 11, 2025, some students can be particularly pleased: Carla, Livia, Lisa, Linda and Luke passed the Latin supplement exam. This examination, which is colloquially known as a "Latinum test" or "Small Latinum", took place at the University of Innsbruck at the end of May. With the existence of this exam, you have met an important prerequisite for numerous courses that are connected, for example in the areas of humanities, medicine, law and pharmacy. The Borg Lienz parents' association has taken over the exam fees, which is a great relief for the families. For the proud Latin teacher Uli Fessler, this is another success in the long tradition of Borg Lienz in classical philology.
The Latin supplementary examination is a hurdle for many students, especially for those who cannot prove knowledge of Latin. This examination is required for certain fields of study at the University of Vienna and must be taken over the course of your studies. A change in the exam mode is imminent: From June 2025, course exams for the courses "Introduction to Latin I" and "Introduction to Latin II" will be offered. This new structure is intended to make access to the examination easier for the students and support the preparation. However, the ECTS points of these exams are not among the 180 ECTs required for the Bachelor's degree.
new exam modalities from June 2025
The changes in the examination organization allow students to better prepare for the requirements of the supplementary examination. For the introductory courses for the Latin supplementary examination, there are additional preparatory courses at the Institute for Classical Philology, Middle and New Latin. This benefits from those who cannot provide Latin at least ten hours per week at a higher school, since an additional examination is required in this case. If you already have a well -founded training, you can be released from the additional examination under certain conditions.
In addition, it is important to mention that the supplementary examination must be passed in the bachelor's degree before the last study performance in order to ensure successful completion. However, students in teaching or master programs are excluded from this regulation. Contact with the Student Service Center (SSC) is essential to obtain precise information on examination modalities and procedures.
The creation of exams and the requirements for the students reflect the importance of Latin in the academic landscape. The solid training in Latin remains a cornerstone for many academic career and shows how valuable this old language is in modern courses.
