Snow warning for Carinthia and Tyrol: onset of winter expected by Friday!

In Austria, citizens are facing a wintry event that sometimes brings significant snowfall. According to “GeoSphere Austria”, a yellow snow warning has been issued for large parts of Upper Carinthia, Salzburg, all of East Tyrol and the extreme east of Tyrol. This warning is valid on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, in the late afternoon hours. Meteorologists expect it to snow heavily from west to east for several hours, with snow amounts of 10 to 15 centimeters above 700 meters and up to 25 centimeters at higher elevations, 5 Minutes reported.

The situation in Styria is similar, as sleet is expected there on Tuesday morning up to altitudes of around 800 to 900 meters. The snow line will continue to drop throughout the day, and snowfall could also occur in the valleys of Upper Styria, with estimated amounts of 15 to 20 centimeters of fresh snow in the mountains until Wednesday night. In addition, snowfall is expected in the Gailtal, even in deep valley areas, which increases the winter conditions.

Take special care in traffic

The heavy snowfall is already having an impact on traffic. In Vorarlberg and parts of Tyrol, up to 30 centimeters of fresh snow is expected until Friday morning, which is why a “yellow snow warning” also applies. The risk of traffic disruptions is high and meteorologists advise reducing speed in traffic, avoiding overtaking maneuvers and keeping sufficient distance. “Puls 24” highlights that dense clouds and frequent precipitation, including in the form of rain, can significantly impact visibility and driving conditions.

After the forecast snowfall, the sun could shine again on Friday. However, the weather situation remains tense and it is recommended to prepare for changeable conditions as temperatures fluctuate between minus two and plus four degrees.
