A lack of doctors in the Leoben district: concern for health care

In the Leoben district, the lack of specialists, especially gynecologists, becomes increasingly noticeable. Richard Schmatz, who acts as the spokesman for the resident doctors and himself runs a family practice in St. Stefan Ob Leoben, comments concerned about the current medical care situation. "Gynecologists are currently missing, including practical doctors. It can also be problematic for pediatricians," he explains and points out that the situation in health care remains uncertain in view of Gernot Wurm's pension.

The fears and uncertainties expressed by Schmatz reflect a bigger problem that affects many regions. Despite the importance of broad medical care, it is not possible to gain or maintain enough specialists, which can lead to long waiting times and restricted access to important medical services.

The challenges in medical care

The problem is reinforced by the demographic changes in the population. More and more doctors are approaching retirement age, while at the same time fewer medical specialists move in. Especially in rural areas, such as the Leoben district, the consequences could become serious because their residents rely on reliable medical care.

The challenges that arise from the lack of gynecologists and other specialists require urgent measures. Schmatz calls on those responsible to find solutions to the personnel bottlenecks. This could be done, for example, by incentives for young doctors who want to settle in the region. It is of central importance that health -political strategies are developed to prevent the emigration of medical students to the urban centers.
