Car lands on train tracks in Lustenau – fire brigade on duty!
In the early morning hours of August 25, 2025, a remarkable incident occurred in Lustenau. At around 2:30 a.m. a car landed on the ÖBB tracks. The 30-year-old driver of the vehicle had swerved to the right too early due to carelessness, which resulted in her car coming to a halt on the railway tracks, unable to maneuver. Fortunately, both the driver and other people remained uninjured, as vol.at reports.
The Lustenau and Wolfurt fire departments were immediately mobilized to rescue the vehicle from the tracks. They were supported by an ÖBB operations manager and the ÖBB fire department. The incident led to temporary disruptions to rail traffic, but the damage to the vehicle and the tracks remained minimal: there was slight damage to the underbody of the car and superficial scratches on the tracks. An alcohol test on the driver gave a negative result.
Rail traffic and safety aspects
The incident in Lustenau raises an important point about road safety. In 2021, 20,600 road safety deaths were registered in the European Union, including traffic accidents at level crossings, as documented by Eurostat. These figures highlight the need to take preventive measures in both road and rail transport to avoid accidents.
The quick response of the emergency services in Lustenau shows how important well-coordinated processes are in an emergency. In addition to quickly recovering the vehicle, maintaining road safety is one of the priorities of the fire department and the railway companies.
