Traffic balance 2025: Record low and staunchy summer in the Salzburg region!

On September 7, 2025, the ÖAMTC published its analysis on summer travel traffic, which shows particularly gratifying results for vacationers and commuters. The statistics show a significant decline in traffic jams compared to the previous year.

A total of 369 traffic jams were registered in the summer of 2025, which corresponds to a decline of 35.49% compared to 2024. These traffic jams were counted when they had a length of more than 1.5 kilometers or delays of at least 15 minutes. The cause of this positive development is various factors, including the time equalization of travel days and extensive freedom of construction site in the overarching road network, especially in popular travel areas.

Main causes for traffic jams

As the ÖAMTC reports, traffic overload was the most common reason for traffic jams, which made the lion's share with 50.95%. Accidents followed in second place with 23.04%, while construction sites with 14.36% caused delays. Compared to 2024, when construction sites still made 11.36%, this is a significant increase.

The good news is that traffic jams could be reduced to 2.98% due to defective or burning vehicles after they were 8.57% in the previous year. The traffic jams due to border controls also remained almost unchanged at 7.59%, which is hardly noticeable in 2024 compared to 7.34%.

Traffic development on main traffic routes

The main traffic routes were at the limit this year, but the rams and time losses were limited. A concise example of a disturbance was the lock of the Tauern tunnel on August 2, which led to significant delays. The record traffic jam of the summer was registered with 30 kilometers backlog in front of the Pongau towards the south.

An equalization of travel traffic, which is favored by increased night trips, the use of weekdays as travel days and the increasing popularity of the low season, contributes to improving the traffic situation. Traffic advisor Herbert Thaler confirmed that the travel season in the large rooms of Salzburg and the Tauern motorway ran overall.

Measures and outlook

Despite dense column traffic on the weekends, there was usually a trouble -free traffic process. The block handling in front of motorway tunnels was proclaimed in several cases, with the waiting times mostly half an hour. The successful completion of tunnel construction sites between golling and throwing brought additional relief, while construction sites in other regions such as Vienna caused significant traffic jams.

Tyrol, with 30.62% of the total traffic jam events, was particularly susceptible to the congestion, followed by Salzburg with 17.48%. The long -distance pass route (B179) contributed 13.28% to the traffic jams, although the numbers have remained absolutely the same. Upper Austria (7.99%) and Styria (6.50%) benefited from the good construction site situation and had fewer traffic disruptions.

In summary, the ÖAMTC has accounted for a successful travel season, which, despite certain challenges, was largely smooth. Road users could benefit from the defusing of the traffic situation through increased planning and flexible travel behavior in the future.
