The situation in the healthcare system of the city of Wels is alarming: an acute lack of doctors means that the second largest city in Upper Austria is now practically without general practitioners. According to a report by Today.at can no longer get appointments because there is simply a lack of available doctors. Particularly explosive: At the end of the year, the only dermatologist in Wels is retired, which also tightens the medical care of the population. Health officer and Vice Mayor Klaus Schinninger (SPÖ) criticizes the condition and demands that citizens have to receive the best medical care without additional costs.

To counter the dramatic situation, was on Wels-Grieskirchen Clinic set up a new general medical care unit. This measure came into force on November 13, 2023 and is to ensure patient care during the transition period until the vacant doctor points are occupied. Dietbert Timmerer, managing director of the clinic, said that a team of doctors and nurses will look after the Wels citizens who currently have no family doctor. The new unit is limited to three years and is a cooperation between the state of Upper Austria, the Austrian Health Insurance Fund and the Clinic itself.
