32-year-old convicted of attempted murder: court sentences her to 20 years in prison
On Wednesday evening there was a sensational verdict in the Korneuburg regional court. A 32-year-old woman was found guilty of attempting to murder her former partner and sentenced to 20 years in prison. In addition, accommodation in a forensic therapeutic center was ordered. However, this decision is not yet legally binding.
The allegations focused on two attempted murders and a fake knife attack. The case particularly attracted attention because of the benediction of the crimes and the substances used. The defendant is said to have given her then partner methanol and psychoactive mushrooms in a drink at a party on July 8, 2022. This resulted in severe methanol poisoning, which could only be averted through intensive medical intervention. The victim's eyes were severely affected, so an expert determined that improving his vision was not possible.
The details of the offenses
Another murder attempt followed on the night of November 3, 2022. After eating muffins prepared with Rohypnol and Sirdalud, the man suffered cuts on his forearm. Here too he could only be saved with difficulty. During the course of the trial, the defendant brought up a suicide attempt, which she justified with the separation from her partner. Nevertheless, serious allegations were made against her, including that she had inflicted the wounds on the man herself. One reason for her actual actions could have been a significant financial motive, as she was listed as the sole heir in his will - upon his death she would have inherited assets worth around three million euros.
In the subsequent investigations, the defendant reported an alleged murder attempt by her ex-partner, but this was also viewed as fabricated. A report concluded that her victim was unable to react adequately due to severely impaired vision. The woman herself was finally arrested on July 14 of the previous year after there was sufficient evidence against her.
Manipulation and false evidence
The defendant strongly denied the attempted murder, but gave a partial confession to many of the allegations of false evidence and defamation. Her statement that she could “never” harm another person was met with skepticism by the prosecutor, who characterized her as a “master of manipulation.” “Don’t let the defendant fool you,” she said while addressing the jury, who ultimately found her guilty after deliberating for almost five hours.
The court weighed various factors when determining the sentence. Mitigating circumstances were taken into account due to the defendant's partial confession and previous cleanliness, while the serious consequences of the acts and the fact that they were directed against a relative were considered aggravating.
The psychiatric expertise, which classified the defendant as sane, nevertheless attested to a severe personality disorder, which manifests itself in massive lying behavior. In addition, the punishment was supplemented by financial compensation, so that the defendant has to pay the victim around 193,000 euros.
Although the verdict has been pronounced, the final legal force of the decision is still pending due to the announced review by the defense. After the court appearances, it remains to be seen how the trial will develop, especially since the public prosecutor has not yet made any statements.
