New two-way bike path opened on the new building belt in Vienna!

Neubaugürtel, 1070 Wien, Österreich - On June 18, 2025, a new two-way bike path on the new building belt in Vienna opened in the 7th district. This 250-meter-long direct connection between Mariahilfer Straße and Stollgasse is an important step in the Vienna cycle path offensive, which includes over 250 projects and almost 100 kilometers in the main cycle path network. According to press.wien.gv.at, the new bike path enables a significantly faster and safe crossing of the new building belt. So far, cyclists had to cross the street twice and pass several traffic lights. Due to the new design, the route was reduced from 400 meters to just 250 meters, which significantly shortens the travel time. The mobile city councilor Ulli Sima and NEOS mobility spokeswoman Angelika Pipal-Leixner were responsible for the ceremonial opening.

security through separation

The new cycle path is clearly separated from motorized traffic, which ensures a protected cycling. Colorful concrete control walls were offset in the night of 13 and 14 June, 2025 and contribute to the safety of cyclists. An additional improvement is two new green arrows on pedestrian crossings that make it possible to progress quickly. The situation remains unchanged for motorized traffic, since a lane had already been omitted due to a construction site.

Vienna invests around 130 million euros in the expansion of the wheel infrastructure. The proportion of bike paths in the overall traffic network is 11 % in 2024, compared to 7 % in 2019. These figures illustrate the extensive progress that the city has made with regard to its cycle path offensive, which on both residents and for visitors put numerous new bicycle projects on the scene, as bicyclewien.at reported.

outlook for future projects

The Viennese cycle path offensive does not only refer to the new opening on the new building belt. Numerous other cycle paths and bicycle -friendly roads are to be built in the coming years. Projects are planned in the following districts:

District Project
1010 Freda-Meissner-Blau-promenade: two-direction cycle path from Salztorbrücke to Marienbrücke
1020 Rembrandtstraße: two-direction cycle path from Obere Donaustraße to Obere Augartenstraße
1030 Landstraßer Hauptstraße: two-direction cycle path from Leberstrasse to Viehmarktgasse
1100 Laxenburger Straße: Cycling against the one -way from Heuberggstättenstraße to Reifenalgasse
1210 Leopoldauer Straße: Installation cycle path from Angerer Strasse to Angyalfölder Straße

With these and many other measures, the city will continuously continue its ambitions to improve cycling conditions, which not only contributes to the promotion of environmentally friendly mobility, but also increases the quality of life in Vienna, as is shown on bicyclewien.at.
