Climate protection protest in Alpbach: Requirements for courageous laws 2040!
There was an important demonstration in Alpbach, which was organized by Fridays for Future and young scholarship holder: inside of various Alpbach clubs. The occasion was a joint draft of the ÖVP for a new climate law and the upcoming negotiations on the EU climate target 2040. Laila Kriechbaum from Fridays for Future criticized Minister's draft law in Totchnig, the climate -neutral goals for 2040 pranks.
Loud Oekonews Kreiechbaum called for the introduction of clear sector goals, emissions budgets and binding plans in the event of target distortions. She was supported by Michael Spiekermann, who pointed out the concerned attitude of the Austrian government at EU level. He found that Austria is preparing for penalty payments to the EU, while at the same time adequate support for an ambitious European climate target for 2040 is delayed.
Demonstrating demands
According to the participants: Inside, it is more about political strategic decisions. The EU Science Council explains that the Paris Agreement demands a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 90-95% by 2040 compared to 1990. In this context, three central claims to the representatives of the political parties were formulated:
- Sozialdemokraten und Neos sollen keinem Klimagesetz zustimmen, das keine klaren Ziele und Klimaneutralität 2040 enthält.
- Minister Totschnig soll sich für ein ambitioniertes EU-Klimaziel 2040 ohne Lücken einsetzen.
- Der Ankauf ausländischer CO₂-Zertifikate soll stark begrenzt werden.
Samira Ben Ali, a climate activist, emphasized that climate protection was a human right and that both the EU and the Member States are obliged to reduce their emissions. Sigrid Stagl, professor of environmental economics, appealed to Austria, to take responsibility and make courageous political decisions. This is particularly important in view of the European Commission's advance of July 2, 2025 to change the EU climate law, which provides for a reduction in net floating house gas emissions by 90 percent by 2040 compared to 1990, such as The Federal Chancellery reported.
EU climate target 2040
The European Commission's proposal is based on the political guidelines for 2024 to 2029 and pursues the goal of decarbonizing the European economy by 2050. A central element of the proposal is the creation of flexible regulations to support the 90 percent goal, which was underpinned by comprehensive discussions with Member States, the European Parliament and civil society.
In addition to the climate goals, the EU also focuses on the development of Sa Cleaner energy sources. How The European Parliament reports, over 20 percent of the EU's energy consumption comes from renewable sources - a share that is to be increased to 42.5 percent by 2030. This happens against the background of a gradual departure of natural gas investment in favor of hydrogen and offshore energy infrastructures.
Fridays for Future announced that on October 10, 2025 they will organize a large strike in Vienna and that they will take place until then weekly protests. In doing so, they underline the urgency of measures to protect climate protection and the need for politics to follow scientific knowledge.
