Carinthian company loses tens of thousands of euros due to email fraud!

In an alarming incident, a serious email scam occurred in Carinthia in which a local company fell victim to criminal activity. How Gailtal Journal reported that the company received an email in which new account details were supposedly provided. But behind this message was a hacked account, and the company transferred several invoices worth tens of thousands of euros to the said account before the fraud was noticed.

The fraud was only discovered weeks later, when a Western European company contacted the Carinthian company on August 27, 2025 to inquire about unpaid invoices. Subsequent investigations revealed that the new account details did not belong to the foreign company. The Carinthian company has now filed a complaint and further investigations are underway to shed light on the matter.

The background to email fraud

The incident highlights the risks associated with cybercrime. Cybercriminals often use phishing emails or data breaches to gain unauthorized access to other people's accounts, like this Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) explained. After breaking into a system, they can sell illegal goods or even create new accounts under false names to exploit the trust of third parties.

Analysis shows that many victims suffer financial harm and often do not take steps to improve their security for fear of further consequences. The BSI provides recommendations for securing digital identity, including using strong passwords, activating two-factor authentication and careful handling of emails.

The growing threat of cyber crime

Cyber crime covers a wide range of crimes that use modern information technology, as the BSI points out. According to a study, around one in four people have been victims of such behavior, with a third of those affected suffering financial damage. With increasing digitalization, the scope of cybercrime is expected to continue to grow, and perpetrators often remain anonymous, while victims are in most cases prosecuted from their perspective.

To prevent the spread of malware and malicious activities, experts recommend constant vigilance in Internet activities. Security updates for software and operating systems should be installed promptly and virus scanners should be actively used in order to best protect your own infrastructure. Victims of cyber crime are encouraged to report incidents to the local police station in order to provide an up-to-date picture of the situation and, if necessary, to help clarify the situation.

The case of the Carinthian company is an urgent call to raise awareness of cyber security and better protect personal data in order to prevent such incidents in the future.
