Young Austrians disinterested: Politics is missing its chance!
An alarming new study by the Linz market research institute Market shows a strong lack of interest among the young generation in political participation in Austria. While an impressive 95 percent of those over 50 are actively following the formation of a government by the ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS, only 60 percent of those under 30 are informed about how oe24.at reported. This represents a clear state of alarm considering that a third of those surveyed could not even name the governing parties. Pollster David Pfarrhofer emphasizes that politicians are failing to adequately reach young people and that many are feeling left behind as a result.
However, the results of the study do not only paint a negative picture. Despite political indifference, young people show surprising optimism compared to older generations. 75 percent of those over 50 feel treated fairly, while this figure is only 60 percent of younger people. In order to gain the trust and interest of young people in political issues, more active measures and commitment are required from politicians. How ooe.ORF.at notes, it will be crucial for the future to find ways to be more inclusive of young people's interests and opinions and to make them feel that their voice counts.
