Grazer AmoFlauf: Matura students do not have to check orally!

Graz, Österreich - A tragic event shakes the school community in Graz: On June 18, 2025, a killing spree in an upper school high school in Dreierschützengasse demanded the life of nine students and a teacher. The 21-year-old perpetrator, who legally had a shotgun and a pistol, then committed suicide in the school building. The police were only six minutes after the first emergency calls. During the search of the suspect's residence, not only a non -functional pipe bomb and stop plans, but also a farewell video and an analog farewell letter were found.

The injured, between the ages of 15 and 26, are all in stable condition, but five of them had to be brought to the intensive care unit. A total of eleven people were injured. The students who lost their lives were between the ages of 14 to 17. Investigations into the development of tapes and surveys by several hundred people are running, while at the same time an increased police presence was ordered to Graz schools. For concerned, crisis intervention teams of the Red Cross and school psychologists were activated that offer support.

Special regulations for the Matura class

In view of the tragic circumstances, the National Council unanimously decided on an exception to the Matura class. Students who are affected by the incident can take their matriculation examination positively without oral testing. The application for exemption must be submitted by the end of August. On request, the Maturants can receive a Matura certificate in which the annual grade is the Maturanote. However, there is still the possibility to take the oral exams regularly or to catch up, either before the summer vacation or in the first secondary appointment in autumn.

Responsibility for prevention and intervention in emergencies lies with the school management. In Germany, for example, systematic planning and instructions for school emergencies have been developed in Germany in the past 20 years. These were created in cooperation with school regulatory authorities and school psychological specialists. School psychological services that deal with crisis intervention and psychosocial emergency care (PSNV) at schools can offer valuable support. Well -planned crisis intervention is essential at schools. Solid preparation can be decisive for those affected in the event of emergencies.

In view of the terrifying events, imitation perpetrators have appeared that have expressed threats, including a bomb threat to Graz Central Station. Schools are therefore called to act preventively and take intervention standards into account in order to ensure the protection of students.

The situation remains tense, and it is essential to offer psychological support and to strengthen the security measures in order to give the students and teacher a feeling of security.
