Viennese lines win with Auto -Wette - Mobility Prize 2023!
On September 18, 2025, the “car bet” of the Vienna lines was awarded the VCÖ Mobility Prize in Vienna in 2023. This prize bears the motto "Future Fit for City and Country", which underlines the importance of sustainable mobility solutions. This year, 73 projects were submitted, many of them from a single federal state. The "car bet" stands out through its innovative approach: 37 households gave their car keys for three months and instead used publications, bicycles and sharing offers. On average, they reduced their monthly expenses from 500 euros to 340 euros, which represents a significant saving.
A quarter of the participating households even decided to sell their car, while two thirds provide to want to live car -free in the future. These are impressive figures that reflect the growing willingness to change in the mobility behavior of the Viennese population. In Vienna, 47% of households are currently car-free, while the number of cars per 1,000 people has been reduced from 404 to 363 in the past 20 years. This development shows the successes in the urban traffic transition, which is becoming increasingly important.
Excellent projects excellent
In addition to the "car bet", several projects were honored for their exemplary design of urban rooms. The redesign of the Galileigasse to Vienna-Alsergrund, which was designed by 23 students from the Vienna University of Technology as a temporary pedestrian zone, offers new meeting rooms with greening and raised beds. The redesign of Praterstrasse, carried out by a team from the office 3: 0 landscape architecture, con.sen's traffic planning and Weatherpark, also received recognition. New trees and the sponge city principle are intended to avoid flooding and increase quality of stay for pedestrians and cyclists.
At the award ceremony of the VCÖ mobility prize, Petra Hums from the Viennese lines and Silvia Nossek, district manager Währing, received the awards. The prize is supported by cooperation with the city of Vienna and the ÖBB, which are considered an obstetrician for innovative mobility. The VCÖ also offers an online database with more than 2,500 mobility projects that can serve as a source of inspiration.
Challenges and approaches to the traffic transition
Despite in view of these positive developments, cities face major challenges, such as the climate and resource crisis, an aging society as well as the shortage of skilled workers and digitization. These topics were recently focused by a scientific advisory board with the Federal Minister of Digital and Transport. The need for a comprehensive transformation of society, industry, cities and transport systems is undisputed. Urban areas in particular have to make their contribution to reducing climate -friendly emissions in order to meet future requirements.
The debates about the traffic transition are currently focusing on the challenges in the cities, such as the increasing number of cars and commuters: inside. Strategies such as the "Livelihood City" and the "15 minutes of city" are central ideas of these discussions. Successful approaches in larger cities include car and bike sharing and the expansion of bike paths. However, urgent measures are also required to redesign public spaces and expand attractive alternatives in public transport.
In order to do justice to the climate goals, integrated planning is required, which includes reducing traffic and creating safe cycling infrastructures. In the past, motorization in cities has had space competitions and negative effects on traffic safety. These topics must be taken into account when planning urban mobility solutions in order to increase the quality of life of the residents: to increase inside.
