New economic war between USA and Russia? Experts warn!
A new economic conflict between the US and Russia could be brewing as Donald Trump moves to implement his plans to end the war in Ukraine. Trump has announced that he wants to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky next week. A meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin is also in prospect, as shown on oe24 is reported. Keith Kellogg, Trump's special US envoy to Ukraine, signaled in an interview that the US wants to use frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine and force Putin to cooperate.
Retaliation from Moscow
The Kremlin's reaction was not long in coming. Moscow also plans to freeze foreign assets in response to the US initiatives, which could have a significant impact on American investment funds that are still investing billions in Russia. Experts are already warning of a new economic war, which could further worsen the tense situation between the two countries. Trump's goal is to potentially freeze the conflict, leaving Russian-occupied territories - about 20 percent of Ukraine - in an insecure state for now. Security guarantees for Ukraine should also serve to prevent future aggression from Moscow, he said ZDF.
Another planned action by the US government could put pressure on Zelensky to hold presidential elections in the event of a ceasefire. This is interpreted as a strategy to weaken his political position, while Zelensky makes it clear that new elections will only be possible after the war and the lifting of martial law. Developments in these political maneuvers could be crucial in the coming weeks.
