Austrians demand new government before Christmas: Who is for it?
The political situation in Austria is currently causing a conversation, in particular the question of whether a new government will be facing Christmas. According to a survey by Peter Hajek, which was carried out between December 9 and 12, 2024, only 22 percent of Austria would like to form a government formation up to the holidays. About 33 percent find this rather important, while 25 percent of a government formed before the holidays are less important, and 11 percent do not find this time frame significant. The voters particularly urge: inside the FPÖ, 64 percent of whom government formation consider very important or important. This confirms the statements of Alexandra Siegl from the FPÖ in relation to the urgency to have the citizens: to have an agreement on the inside, especially in view of the tense budget situation and economic situation.
The anticipation for Christmas and the economic importance
While there is uncertainty in politics, the Christmas season is just around the corner in Germany, which counts for many at the most beautiful time of the year. According to Statista, around 60 percent of the population share this positive impression, with Christmas customs such as setting up an advent wreath or visiting Christmas markets. A popular goal is the Christmas market: around 58 percent of Germans plan to visit one this season. Christmas not only has a cultural, but also a significant economic dimension, since many companies are dependent on this time in order to achieve a good part of their annual sales. After the years of crisis, the anticipation grew and the expenses for gifts rise again.
Despite the high consumer behavior, sustainability considerations have also come to the fore. Almost 20 percent of those surveyed pay attention to environmentally friendly products when shopping for Christmas dinner. Second-hand gifts are popular, especially among the younger generation, which is increasingly interested in used clothing. So different trends overlap the Christmas season, which is emotionally significant for many and leaves a place for personal traditions. The anticipation of family harmonies and celebrations together is also very pronounced, so that an average of 7.4 people come together to celebrate together.
