Knife attack in Düsseldorf library: Two young people injured!

On Saturday afternoon there was a shattering incident in the Düsseldorf central library when a woman attacked two 17-year-old young people with a knife. The emergency call received the police at 11.13 a.m. after a dispute between the perpetrator and the young people escalated. The incident occurred on the third floor of the library, which is located on Konrad-Adenauer-Platz near the main train station. Despite the rapid reaction of the rescue workers and the police, one of the young people was seriously injured and had to be treated in a hospital, while the second was released with minor injuries after outpatient treatment, as kosmo.at.

The perpetrator was arrested at the crime scene and was instructed to a psychiatric clinic. According to the police, she is not part of the drug or homeless scene, which also complicates the circumstances of the crime. It is currently unclear whether the woman is guilty and the investigation is still in progress. The area of the library in which the incident took place was cordoned off to carry out evidence.

An increase in violent crime

The incident in Düsseldorf can be classified in a context of increasing violent crimes in Germany. The violent crime, which includes murder, serious bodily harm, rape and robbery, make up less than 4% of all police crimes. Nevertheless, it significantly influences the population's feeling of security. In 2024, around 217,000 violent crimes were registered, the highest number since 2007, and after a low during the Corona pandemic in 2021, when only around 165,000 cases arose. Since then, the number of acts of violence has risen rapidly again, almost a third higher than in 2021, which could be attributed to economic uncertainties and social stress, according to Statista in their analysis of violent crime in Germany.

In 2023, impressive 2,740 acts of violence against rescue workers were recorded, which illustrates the increasing threat to specialists. A survey from May 2024 showed that 94% of German violence and aggression against people from politics, police and rescue services see as a major problem. The increasing number of violence under the age of 21, which now makes up for around a third of the suspects, raises questions about the social framework and dealing with young people.

The investigation after the knife attack in Düsseldorf continues, and the police are under pressure to educate the background and the motif of the perpetrator. The incident not only shaken the families concerned, but also the public who is concerned about their feeling of security.
