Nationwide Warning Day 2025: 97% receive warnings – that’s how safe you are!
On September 15, 2025, the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) will publish the preliminary results of a large-scale survey on the Nationwide Warning Day 2025. Around 93,560 participants took part in the survey, with remarkable results being achieved regarding the warning systems in Germany. According to fireworld.at, 97 percent of respondents were successfully warned, while 75 percent received these warnings via the cell broadcast system. In addition, BBK President Ralph Tiesler reported that over 90 percent of participants actively reached at least one warning channel.
The survey, which runs until September 18, 2025, shows increasing awareness of the various warning channels among the population. 66 percent of those surveyed noticed the sirens, which corresponds to an increase of seven percent compared to the previous year. In addition, 83 percent of those surveyed have at least one warning app installed on their smartphone, which illustrates the increasing digital awareness of dangerous situations.
Procedure and goals of the warning day
The nationwide warning day takes place annually on the second Thursday in September, this year on September 11th at 11 a.m. The aim of this campaign is to test the technical functionality of the warning systems and to raise awareness among the population about the correct behavior in an emergency. The Antenne reports that the Modular Warning System (MoWaS) will be activated for the first time for a trial warning, followed by warning messages sent via broadcasters and warning apps such as NINA and KATWARN be sent. Local warning devices such as sirens and loudspeaker trucks are also used.
The main goals of the warning day are to check the resilience of the infrastructure and to make the population aware of the importance of warning signals. It is expected that citizens will actively engage with the tested warning devices. The broad information base not only enables a smooth test process, but also promotes trust in Germany's warning systems.
Technical options for warning
For the warning day, citizens have two technical warning options available: the use of warning apps and the Cell Broadcast mobile service. With apps like NINA, it is necessary to subscribe to a specific location to receive relevant alerts. To be effectively informed, cell phones should not be muted on warning day, and Cell Broadcast requires an up-to-date operating system. In particular, users should be careful not to be in airplane mode to receive the warning messages, as the Federal Government explains.
The latest surveys and test results show that the population in Germany is increasingly trusting warning systems. This is a positive trend that is also of great importance for the preparation for the next nationwide warning day in 2026, which will take place on September 10, 2026. Information about the warning day is available on the official BBK website at bbk.bund.de.
