New course for surgical technical assistance starts in Carinthia!

In November 2022, an innovative training course for surgical technical assistance started at the KABEG educational campus, which is now generating great interest in Carinthia. According to information from ORF Carinthia This three-year training course offers excellent job prospects, as the assistants are particularly indispensable in hospital operating rooms. Training manager Martina Scherwitzl explains: “You prepare the patients and the required instruments, instrument them and assist the doctor in the operating room.” The internships also include the emergency room and trauma room, which guarantees the training a sound practical basis.

A job with a future

How ktn.gv.at reports, the dynamics in medicine are normalizing, and new professional groups are necessary to do justice to this development. Health officer LHStv.in Beate Prettner emphasizes the importance of this training as a “new model of success” for Carinthia. From the second year of training, the participants already have a job, which increases the attractiveness of this training. The course covers a total of 4,600 hours, with 1,600 hours of theory and 3,000 hours of practice, allowing the prospective surgical assistants to immerse themselves directly in everyday medical practice.

The first 30 trainees were selected from 140 applications and are motivated to take on their new tasks. Ryan Simtschitsch, one of the “pioneers” of this training, even gave up his history studies for his “dream job”. Marilena Lachin, a former paramedic, is also excited about the opportunity to take on a new professional challenge in medicine. The total cost of the training is around 524,000 euros, which will be fully covered by the state to ensure the training of future skilled workers in the region.
