Revolution in the energy market: Renewable energies are booming worldwide!
Asien, Welt - The world increasingly relies on renewable energies, as the report "Renewable Capacity Statistics 2025", published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena). In 2024, electricity generation from renewable energies achieved an impressive total capacity of 4,448 gigawatt (GW). This corresponds to an increase of 585 GW, which has identified 92.5 % of the global capacity expansion. With an annual growth rate of 15.1 %, the trend remains positive, but the Irena notes that an annual capacity increase of 16.6 % would be required for the ambitious goal of tripling the installed performance by 2030.
The regional distribution of growth is very uneven. Asia leads the ranking, whereby China alone generates 64 % of the global increase in capacity, which means that 278 GW of the new photovoltaic plants is eliminated on the large country. In comparison, Central America and the Caribbean only contribute 3.2 %. Another worrying point is that developing countries, especially in Africa, are far behind when expanding.
challenges and needs
Francesco La Camera, the general director of the Irena, emphasizes the need to reform political measures in order to reduce inequalities when accessing renewable energies. UN General Secretary António Guterres Hait Hait as a milestone in the economic turnaround towards fossil fuels. Other renewable energy sources such as hydropower, wind power and bioenergy also recorded growth, but solar and wind energy together accounts for 96.6 % of the global net supplement. These trends are primarily due to the falling costs and the increasing efficiency of these technologies.
In 2023, Irena reported a record value in the area of renewable energies with a capacity increase of 473 GW. While Asia is at the top with 69 % of the growth, the capacity in Africa only grows by 4.6 %. The total capacity of renewable energies achieved 3,870 GW, so that the challenges for fairness and justice remain concise during the global energy transition.
A look into the future
The energy market is expected to continue growing, supported by an increase in the world population and economic developments. According to an analysis, the mixture of the energy sources is moved strongly towards clean and sustainable options. The dominance of fossil fuels will remove in the coming decades, even if they remain important in countries, especially in countries with a high dependence on these sources. Improvements in energy storage technologies and the integration of renewable energies into the network infrastructure are crucial for the successful transition to sustainable energy.
The geopolitical tensions, such as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, illustrate the need to diversify energy portfolios and reduce dependencies. In addition, it is important to reduce production costs and develop innovative techniques in order to increasingly replace the fossil fuels and thus contribute to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.
A complete analysis of these developments can be found in the report “Renewable Capacity Statistics 2025” by Irena, which offers extensive data and insights.
