Trump plans mass camps for migrants: Guantánamo Bay will become a hotspot!
In a dramatic step, the US government under President Donald Trump has brought the first detained migrants to the Guantánamo Bay military base in Cuba. However, Mexico has strictly rejected the US plans and signaled that it would prefer to take in the migrants itself. Outside diplomatic channels, Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente has made it clear that Mexico will not allow Mexican citizens to be transported to Guantánamo. This reports exxpress.at.
On Tuesday, a US military plane took off with the first transport of migrants to Guantanamo. Trump plans to fill the base camp with up to 30,000 "criminal immigrants," with White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt stressing that the U.S. "no longer wants to be a dumping ground for illegal criminals." According to reports, the camp's existing stockpile of migrants will be significantly increased and the base's manning will be expanded to around 300 soldiers to set up a new tent city for migrants, such as the New York Times communicates.
Rapid change at the US base
The operation ordered by Trump represents a massive expansion at the small base in Cuba, known as a notorious prison camp since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Supplies and personnel must already be brought in to support the new migrant accommodation. Logistics are carried out through regular air and sea freight missions. A tenfold increase in the population there is expected, which could transform the camp from a simple prison site into a much larger complex.
A 50-tent camp is already being set up near the so-called “Migrant Operations Center” to accommodate the upcoming wave of arrivals. In the midst of these developments, the site is being prepared for one of the biggest changes in years, and the instructions for this approach are already attracting strong criticism from various quarters. Trump and his administration are therefore pursuing a clear line: a decisive course to combat illegal migration and to create new detention options as part of stricter immigration policies.
