Vienna invests in a new water pipe: securing water supply!

The city of Vienna makes significant investments in the renewal of the water supply in order to ensure the quality and reliability of its drinking water supply in the long term. As part of this project, a 130 -year -old water pipe is replaced, which runs under the Vienna River. These modernized lines should not only improve the water supply in the west of Vienna, but also offer more environmentally friendly and efficient solutions. Due to the simultaneous coordination with the construction of the new Wiental Canal, numerous infrastructural progress can also be made.

The renewal affects a 70 meter long pipe with a diameter of 870 millimeters, which has led high source water from the Lainz water tank to the Hungry Mountain container in Döbling. The work has started since April 2024 and extend over several intersections in Hietzing, with the aim of being able to stabilize the water supply by July 2025. The pipeline is carried out under the Vienna river with a special machine that laid a envelope with an inner diameter of 1.6 meters before a water pipe with a diameter is installed.

future developments

The final closure of the shaft is planned for the summer of 2025, followed by the commissioning of the new management. In addition, the surface in St.-Veit-Gasse will be completed by mid-October 2025, where a greening is also planned. An important aspect of planning is the second crossing of the Vienna river with a new drinking water pipe, which is to be realized in early 2026. Investments of around three million euros are provided for the renewal of these two crossings.

The upcoming 5th main line, which runs 5.2 kilometers from Mildeplatz in the 16th district to Sieveringer Straße in 19th district, is another step in the expansion of the water supply network. These construction work will be completed by the end of 2026 and ensure that Vienna will continue to be known for its high quality drinking water.

Information about the construction work

The Info Center at the Gaudenzdorfer Gürtel informs the public about the developments related to the Vienna Valley Canal and wastewater management. The opening times are: Thursday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The construction work of the 5th main line is coordinated in three sections by Viennese water (MA 31). The first section begins in Waldeckgasse and Scherffenberggasse in May 2025 and is led to the 17th district via various streets. The aim of these measures is not only to renew the supply lines, but also to improve the infrastructure in the city, which is crucial for water quality.

In summary, it can be said that Vienna wants to make its water supply future -proof with these efforts. Investments in old and new lines are essential to ensure the water supply in the city at any time.
