The future of hydrogen: government session reveals urgent need for action!
Deutschland - Today, on August 12, 2025, the gas and hydrogen economy takes stock over the first 100 days of the new federal government. In its recently published report, the Austrian press service emphasizes that the announcements in the federal budget and the Germany fund are considered positive impulses. Nevertheless, there is considerable need for action at the political level, in particular with regard to concrete funding instruments and clear tender modalities for new gas power plants, which are of crucial importance for hydrogen wheat and the establishment of a CO2 market.
The focus is on the urgency of the cabinet decision to amend the carbon dioxide storage law (KSPG), which must be implemented quickly. The federal government's energy policy course was rated as positive, but also with light and shadow. The special fund "Infrastructure and climate neutrality" as well as the Germany funds offer opportunities for record investments in the transformation processes.critical location for hydrogen projects
Despite these positive approaches, industry representatives warn that the current power plant strategy is being critically observed. Hydrogen -capable gas power plants must fill the hydrogen core network and stabilize renewable electricity generation. The overdue tenders for H2-Ready capacities face indispensable requirements: Without clear guidelines for performance remuneration, no new projects for hydrogen use can be started. The delays in the hydrogen wheal could have serious consequences for the planned coal phase -out.
A decisive factor also remains to build up a powerful hydrogen economy. According to a report from the BDEW, hydrogen is indispensable as the future energy source. However, the structure of this economy is only at the beginning, whereby political framework conditions are necessary for successful implementation. The Federal Government already presented the national hydrogen strategy (NWS) on June 10, 2020, which recognizes the key role of hydrogen when achieving the climate goals.
funding instruments and innovation strategies
A central element of the NWS is the national innovation program for hydrogen and fuel cell technology, which provides up to 1.4 billion euros for the period from 2016 to 2026. In addition, the future package of the coalition committee was equipped with 7 billion euros for the market high run of hydrogen technologies. Another earmarked amount of 2 billion euros is aimed at international partnerships to support the hydrogen market.
The H2Global Foundation, which was launched in June 2021, promotes the hydrogen market with a double auction model. An international auction for the purchase of "green hydrogen" is organized. The most economical offer receives a long -term contract that creates planning security for providers. These measures contribute to creating incentives for companies, investing in hydrogen use systems and thus contributing to the energy transition.
The energy industry and political actors agree: a faster, technology -open legal framework is crucial to promote investments and combine climate protection with competitiveness. The ongoing dialogue and the cooperation between different stakeholders are essential to exploit the great potential of hydrogen technology and promptly implement the planned measures for the decarbonization of industry, traffic and heat.
Overall, the challenge will be to create the necessary infrastructure and the legal framework in order to reduce production costs for renewable hydrogen and to establish a strong, competitive hydrogen market economy. The way to a greener future not only requires visionary strategies, but also the consistent implementation in practice.
