Vingegaard before Vuelta-Sieg: Gall remains eight in the overall classification
Jonas Vingegaard took one step closer to his first overall victory on the Spain cycling tour with an impressive appearance on the 20th stage of Vuelta a España on September 13, 2025. The captain of the Decathlon team, who has won the Tour de France in the past two years, celebrated his third stage win of the Vuelta on the demanding route from Robledo to the Bola del Mundo summit. This demanding stage comprised 165.6 kilometers and over 4,200 meters of altitude, which gave drivers a significant challenge.
On the last mountain arrival, Vingegaard increased his lead in the overall classification on the Portuguese Joao Almeida to 1:16 minutes. Almeida took fifth place in stage finish, but did not have the necessary strength to distance Vingegaard in the final climb.
Rivals and challenges
Vingegaard prevailed in a gripping finale after leaving his main competitors Sepp Kiss and Jai Hindley, who took second and three places. Kiss was 11 seconds behind, while Hindley finished 13 seconds behind the Danish wheel star. Tom Pidcock, the third in the overall classification, was able to defend his place on Vingegaard with a gap of 3:11 minutes.
Felix Gall, who also comes from Austria, fell back to eighth place in the overall classification after ending the stage as 13th with more than two minutes behind Vingegaard. Gall said that it was an extremely difficult day and he fought for every place. Nevertheless, he will probably complete the Vuelta among the top ten.
Protests and security situation
The 20th stage was not only characterized by sporting performance, but also by protests. Almost 20 kilometers before the finish, pro-Palestinian demonstrators tried to block the street. The police were quickly on site to control the situation. The demonstrators held Palestinian flags and ensured a turbulent course, which could be bypassed in good time.
These protests are a central theme of this edition of the tour of the Spain, which is critical of Israel's current approach in the Gaza Strip. Despite the explosive location on the route, the drivers were able to show their performance unhindered and prepare for the last stage in Madrid, which is due next Sunday.
The 80th edition of the Vuelta is expected to end with the flatter stage in the capital, whereby Vingegaard will finish as a top favorite. With his outstanding achievements during the race, the Dane developed a clear advantage that should enable him to defend his red jersey to the target.
