Trump congratulates Carney: New chapter in the tense relationship with Canada!
US President Donald Trump congratulated Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on his election victory in a telephone call today. Carney, who was sworn in on March 14, 2025, leads the Liberal Party, which is expected to win 169 seats in the Canadian Parliament in the general election, just short of an absolute majority of 172 seats. The conservatives under Pierre Poilievre have 144 seats. During the conversation, both politicians emphasized the importance of cooperation as independent, sovereign states and agreed to meet in person in the near future.
However, the congratulations come in a context that is characterized by tensions. In his victory speech, Carney announced that he would oppose the aggressive policies of the US government. This also refers to Trump's previous threat to annex Canada as the 51st US state and the high tariffs imposed on Canada.
New relationships and challenges
Mark Carney has made it clear that the old relationship with the USA is over under Trump. He sees the US President's customs policy as a turning point in bilateral relations and explains that the US is no longer a reliable partner. Carney has said he will not negotiate trade issues unless Trump shows respect for Canada. In this context, he also announced countermeasures to the import tariffs on cars announced by the USA. These measures are intended to have the greatest possible impact in the USA and the smallest possible impact in Canada.
Trump's congratulations were also similarly recognized by other international heads of state and government. Among them are Emmanuel Macron, Keir Starmer, Ursula von der Leyen and António Guterres, who expressed their congratulations on Carney's election victory.
The coming weeks will show how the relationship between Canada and the United States will continue to evolve under this new leadership. Trump and Carney have already agreed to have another telephone call in the near future to discuss the current challenges in the bilateral relationship.
