Tragedy on Lake Rather: Three year old girl drowns in the water!
On June 21, 2025, there was tragically a suspected bathing accident on Rather See, which lies between the Cologne districts of Neubrück and Rath. A three -year -old girl was lifelessly discovered under water around 3:10 p.m. On -site bathers took immediate resuscitation measures, but despite the quick reaction, the child was flown to a nearby clinic with a helicopter, where the doctors were unable to save their lives. The girl's parents suffered a heavy shock and were brought to her daughter by an ambulance while the fire brigade looked after around 30 bathers. The criminal police have started the investigation into this tragic incident in order to clarify the exact circumstances.
The number of bathing accidents in Germany has increased in recent years. The German Life Rescue Society (DLRG) recorded at least 411 fatal accidents in water in 2023, which corresponds to 31 deaths than in 2022. The DLRG also stated for the third time in a row. This is the first time since 2019 that the statistics are again above the 400 victim mark. The DLRG President Ute Vogt expressed the hope that these developments will sensitize many people to the dangers in waters, especially with a view to the upcoming summer.
Enlightenment and prevention
With regard to the increasing figures, the DLRG plans to carry out targeted reconnaissance campaigns for parents of small children in the coming months. A central component of these campaigns is awareness of the special dangers that can lurk on children when bathing. It is particularly emphasized that the purchase of swimming badges is important to promote safe swimming. The swimming badges demonstrate the skills and knowledge in swimming and should only be sought after thorough water habitual. There are three swimming badges with different requirements: the German swimming badge bronze (free swimmer), silver and gold. These badges prove a safe swimming, regardless of age. It is particularly important that the early swimmer badge (seahorse) is not considered proof of safe swimming, and people with this badge should continue to swim under supervision. This information is crucial to inform parents and their children about the risks and necessary knowledge in the water in order to avoid tragic accidents such as at Rather See.
The DLRG will continue to make efforts to raise awareness of swimming skills and the importance of monitoring children in the water to prevent future accidents.
