Finally progress: Expansion of the S36 will start in 2029 for better transport links

The Murtal expressway (S36) in the upper Mur Valley has been a topic in regional traffic for years, but the planned start of the expansion repeatedly delayed. Now there is finally positive news to be heard: the expansion should begin in 2029.

The focus is on the expansion of the S36 from Judenburg to St. Georgen, which includes a distance of 12 kilometers. A full connection point is planned, where the S36 merges into Murtal Straße (B317). According to ASFINAG, the new route should meet the needs of the region in order to take the passage from the villages and to create a secure transport connection between Judenburg and Scheifling.

complex history with many hurdles

The planning for this important traffic project began in 2013. While some sections have already been realized, the start for the section from Judenburg had to be postponed again and again. However, the Styrian State Council of Transport Anton Lang (SPÖ) now announced that there is a green light from the Ministry of Climate Protection. Despite this progress, it will still take until 2029 for all procedures to be completed and the construction work can begin.

The costs for the expansion are significant and amount to around 650 million euros, which are borne by ASFINAG. The construction period is estimated at four to five years, so that the work is expected to be completed by 2034 or 2035.

improvements for the region

The Mayor of Judenburg Elke Florian is optimistic and sees the project a comprehensive relief for the entire region. "We have always been dependent on traffic. If there is a good traffic connection, the city is also doing well, and that is the case here. On the one hand, it brings a lot logistically for industry, but also for the population, since traffic, noise and dust are reduced," she said. Her conclusion: "In total, this is a wonderful project, and we look forward to the groundbreaking ceremony 2029."

In addition, Governor Christopher Drexler (ÖVP) emphasizes that the new street will not only improve the connection to the upper Murtal, but also makes access to Carinthia significantly easier. The expansion of the S36 will thus bring a significant benefit for the infrastructure of the entire region.
