Elections in Styria: FPÖ takes the lead in the state parliament
The election to the new state parliament took place in Styria on Sunday. Compared to the National Council election about eight weeks ago, there were significant changes in this election. The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) has improved a lot and was able to displace the ÖVP from the top. The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) ended up in third place. The Greens suffered a halving of their voices, but were able to assert themselves in front of Neos and KPÖ.
Styria has to award 48 seats in the state parliament. If the current extrapolation is true, the FPÖ could form a government coalition with both the ÖVP and the SPÖ. The possibility of continuing the existing black and red coalition under Governor Christopher Drexler (ÖVP) seems hardly realistic. So far, it was common for either the ÖVP or the SPÖ to provide the governor.
Voting turnout and results
In this election, a total of nine parties were on the ballot papers, with six running nationwide. The otherwise regionally active lists KFG, MFG and DNA, on the other hand, clearly missed the move into the state parliament. These elections could have far -reaching consequences for the political landscape in Styria.
It remains to be seen how the results of the Styria election will continue to have an impact. This election will also initiate discussions about future coalitions and government formation.
