Revolution in truck traffic: Mega charging system tested with over 1 megawatts!

In July 2025, Designwerk Technologies AG made a significant progress in the charging infrastructure for electric trucks. For the first time, the company achieved a charging capacity of over 1 megawatts, specifically a top performance of 1,140 kilowatts, which is well above the previous market standard of 350 kilowatts. These tests took place in the workshop of the National Street area VI in Oberbüren (SG) and mark a decisive step towards the practical suitability of Mega Charging for long-distance trucks. A prototype with a battery capacity of 1,000 kilowatt hours could be charged from 10 to 80 percent in just 42 minutes.

The energy supply of 625 kilowatt hours achieved corresponds to an average charging power of 906 kilowatts. These loading times are compatible with the prescribed driver breaks and enable daily widths of up to 1,000 kilometers. It is noteworthy that 81 kilowatt hours have already been transmitted in the first five minutes of fast charging, which is sufficient for a complete load of a common electric car. The Megawatt charging system was designed and integrated as a mobile container solution and integrated battery buffers that save excess electricity, for example from photovoltaic systems and load tips.

Environmentally friendly solutions and market development

The project not only shows technological progress, but also ecological advantages. The use of second-life batteries made of retired e-truck contributes to reducing CO₂ emissions, with potential savings of thousands of tons per year. The new registrations of battery -electric trucks in Switzerland rose by over 40 percent in the first two quarters in 2025 compared to the previous year, which underlines the growing interest in environmentally friendly transport solutions.

According to ENBW Electric trucks are currently mainly active in distribution traffic and often charge their batteries at night. However, quick charging networks along the long -distance streets are essential for the transport of heavy goods between cities. The national control center for charging infrastructure predicts 354 locations on rest areas with a total of 4,200 charging points in Germany until 2030 in order to meet the needs of heavy traffic.

Expansion of the charging infrastructure in Europe

In order to meet the growing need for e-charging infrastructure, Engie Viano initiated expansion in Germany. The focus is on the TEN-T corridors, the central traffic axes of Europe. The charging infrastructure is specially designed for the requirements of heavy goods traffic, whereby aspects such as space, interfaces and safety are taken into account. However, forwarding companies have concerns about the price volatility of electricity and want a cost structure as with Diesel.

Positive feedback comes from the drivers themselves, which appreciate the quieter trips, better acceleration and reduced vibration of electric trucks. The long -term cost savings for forwarding companies are another incentive for switching to electromobility. User -friendliness is increased by digital processes and multilingual systems, which is particularly important for international drivers.
