ORF extends Bundesliga rights until 2031-that awaits fans!
Ulm, Deutschland - On June 30, 2025, the ORF announced that it secured the rights to the live broadcast of four freely selected games of the Admiral Bundesliga by 2031. This decision was accepted by the clubs of the Bundesliga. The long -term commitment of the ORF also includes the transmission of highlights and news to all games, both on television and online. From the 2026/27 season, a comprehensive “football” highlight program will be broadcast on Sundays at 6.30 p.m. in ORF 1 in order to offer the audience a complete overview of the events in the league. In addition, the so-called "English rounds" games are shown on Wednesday, and the Bundesliga remains present on the ORF radio.
ORF general director Roland Weißmann underlined the importance of sports rights and partnership cooperation with the Austrian Bundesliga, which indicates a long-term and trusting relationship between the two institutions. With this agreement, the ORF viewers up to and including the 2030/31 season are well informed about the Bundesliga events.
changes in the transmission landscape
For the Bundesliga season 2025/26 to 2028/29, media rights were re-awarded, which brings significant changes for football fans. The Pay TV broadcaster Sky will continue to broadcast the Friday evening game as well as all individual games on Saturday afternoon and the top game on Saturday evening. With this, Sky secures almost 80% of the Bundesliga games live and exclusively. In addition to these broadcasts, Sky also shows all games of the 2nd Bundesliga individually and in the conference and broadcasts important games such as the DFL supercup and the relegation games.
The streaming service DAZN meanwhile receives the rights to the Sunday games and a newly introduced Bundesliga conference on Saturday afternoon. Sat.1 is broadcast live on the free TV, including the opening games and relegation games, while RTL shows the top game of the 2nd Bundesliga.
summaries and highlights
The ARD keeps the rights for the first reviews of the game summary of the Bundesliga Portia, which take place in the sports show. The ZDF secures the summaries in the "current sports studio" on Saturday evening and offers highlight clips in the media library and on social media channels from Monday. The highlight clips from RTL are new, which are available for the audience immediately after the end of the game. Sport1 also shows the highlights of first and second division games on Sunday morning.
The auction of media rights brought the DFL a total of 1.121 billion euros, which corresponds to 21 million euros more than in the previous cycle. This shows that the Bundesliga has no decline in the revenue of media rights, in contrast to other European leagues. DFL supervisory board boss Hans-Joachim Watzke was positive about the result of the auction. Interestingly, the rights had to be advertised again after a dispute between the DFL and DAZN had required a new setting of the auction.
Overall, the development of transmission rights shows a dynamic change in the media landscape of football and the continuous pursuit of new partnerships and better offers for the audience.
