Austrians feel unsafe: 77% demand strict weapons laws!

The feeling of security in Austria has deteriorated significantly in the past few weeks, as the current survey by TQS Research & Consulting shows. Especially after the tragic killing spree in Graz, in which a 21-year-old killed nine students and a teacher on June 10th, many citizens look for ways to feel safer. In this context, 77 percent of Austrians speak for a stricter regulation of the Weapons Act. The results of the survey were raised between June 12th and 20th and reflect the concerns of the population that have been reinforced by acts of violence in recent months.

Especially women and younger respondents support the demands for tightening the weapons law. The federal government has reacted and announced that they make access to firearms. These measures are a direct attempt to take the increasing need for security for the population seriously. According to the survey, 22 percent of the participants feel much more insecure, while 44 percent state that they feel a little more insecure. Only 30 percent report an unchanged feeling of security.

fears in the population

The survey also shows that 48 percent of those surveyed deliberately avoid crowds, which underlines the increasing nervousness among the population. Worries about the safety of children and grandchildren in schools are particularly pronounced; 59 percent of the participants express concerns in this regard. These fears may have been reinforced by the recent cancellation of the Taylor swift concerts in Vienna due to terrorist plans, which further affects the feeling of security.

In addition, only 19 percent believe that the current regulation of gun law is sufficient. Only two percent require a loosening of existing laws, which underlines broad support for stricter legislation. The survey dealt with 1,000 participants between the ages of 16 and 65 and was selected according to age, gender, state and level of education.

In summary, the survey shows that the increase in acts of violence, especially the killing spree in Graz, has led to a significant decline in the subjective feeling of security in the Austrian population. The support for a stricter regulation of the Weapons Act is strong and continues to be louder, while the government reacts to the security needs of the citizens.
