Shocking figures: Every fifth woman in Austria is affected!

In order to draw attention to the alarming reality of violence against women, the Socialist Youth (SJ) Grieskirchen/Eferding launched an impressive photo campaign on the occasion of the International Day against Violence against Women on November 25th. “Statistically speaking, almost every woman has been harassed at some point, and every fifth woman in a relationship experiences physical violence,” explained Sophia Kerbler, an activist with the SJ. The frightening figures behind the issue are also obvious: this year alone, 27 women in Austria were killed by men. Kerbler appealed to everyone “not to look away when women around them are threatened or mistreated.” Dorian Velija, another activist, emphasized that every woman affected was one too many and called for urgent action against violence against women.

This campaign is part of the international campaign “16 Days against Violence against Women”, which takes place annually from November 25th to December 10th. The SPÖ women in Upper Austria also express their concern about the high rate of violence. Statistically speaking, one in five women in Austria is affected, while on average in Europe one in three women is a victim of violence. "It is important that girls and women know about their rights. Sharing experiences can be the first step out of violence," explained Sabine Promberger, chairwoman of the SPÖ Women in Upper Austria. In addition, the “Living without violence” campaign was launched, which comprehensively includes women’s shelters and support facilities.

Urgent need for action

In addition to increasing financial resources for women's shelters, the SPÖ women are also calling for the creation of transitional housing to make it easier for women to access protection. In rural regions, the physical distance to women's shelters often represents an insurmountable hurdle. Promberger emphasized that the taboo topic of "domestic violence" requires open discussions and education in order to encourage women to free themselves from violent relationships. “We will remain resolute in our commitment to women’s right to a life free from violence,” she concluded. The activists are sending a strong message for a society in which women can live without fear, as in grieskirchen-eferding.spooe.at is highlighted.
