NÖ State Government sets new accents for bus traffic 2025!

Wien, Österreich - On June 17, 2025, important decisions were made in a meeting of the Lower Austrian state government, chaired by Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner. A main decision concerns the promotion of bus operations to connect to the Vienna-Simmering U3 stop. For 2025, a maximum amount of 145,023.23 euros was decided. This should not only improve accessibility, but also strengthen public transport in the region and thus promote the mobility of citizens.

In addition, the Lower Austria Community Promotion Report 2024 was forwarded to the Lower Austrian state parliament. As part of this meeting, a report on the financial effects of EU membership for 2024 and the invoice for 2024 were also approved. The invoice will soon be published on the homepage of the Lower Austrian Landtag. Another important decision was the approval of the management of curative education integrative kindergarten groups in Lower Austria.

public transport in Austria

A large number of mobility services are available for the users of local public transport in Austria. The Moovit app offers comprehensive information on bus and train timetables, arrival times, service warnings and detailed routes on an interactive card. Users can receive step-by-step instructions for their trips and will be informed in good time when they have to get out. The app plays a central role in navigation through the Austrian tariff system and also offers information about ticket prices.

There are six types of transport in Austria: bus, train, subway, tram, ferry and funicular. Public transport is operated by various transport companies, including Wiener Linien GmbH & Co KG, ÖBB Personal Transport AG and Österreichische Postbus AG.

financing of public transport

A comprehensive analysis of urban public transport (public transport) in Austria was carried out by the KDZ - Center for Administrative Research. This survey shows that the expenditure for urban public transport between 2016 and 2021 rose twice as much as the income. The net expenditure of cities and transport companies increased from 184 million euros in 2016 to 225 million euros in 2021. This represents an increase of 22 percent and raises questions about future financing.

A grant requirement of around 50 percent is expected for the period from 2023 to 2025. While ongoing operating expenses have increased significantly, investments in the infrastructure in many cities have been reduced. In this context, it is noted that not all federal states will forward federal funds for regional climatic pins to urban transport companies. Without suitable countermeasures, important investment projects could be postponed or reduced in public transport, which would endanger the mobility transition.

The discussion about the financing of the municipal public transport is planned for the Financial Equalization Act 2024. A proposal provides to double the federal grants for ongoing operation in accordance with Section 23 FAG 2017. A model for redistribution of the FAG funds in public transport has already been developed by the Vienna University of Technology to meet the challenges of decarbonization and the necessary investments.

In summary, it can be said that the recent decisions of the Lower Austrian state government set the course for improving local public transport in both Lower Austria and Vienna. These measures are crucial to promote mobility and to meet the challenges of the future.
