Progress in Dürnrohr: Waste recycling plant regains 40% capacity

In Dürnrohr, Lower Austria, significant progress is currently being made in waste management. Austria's largest waste recycling plant recently resumed operations after being temporarily shut down due to a flood disaster. At the moment, 40 percent of the usual capacity, around 600 tons of waste per day, has been reached again. According to Stefan Stallinger, CEO of EVN, the remaining incineration lines will also be put into operation by the beginning of December, which should enable the transition to stable, full operation.

The rapid restoration of the system is a direct consequence of targeted measures that were quickly implemented. Stallinger highlights that cooperation between various organizations, including the BAWU (Participation Society for Waste Management and Environmental Protection) and the state of Lower Austria, was crucial to quickly solving the problems caused by the flood. The challenge was not only to get the plant up and running again, but also to recycle over 50,000 tons of bulky flood waste that had also been dammed up.

Efficient collaboration and support

The situation could only be mastered through the intensive cooperation and joint effort of everyone involved, from the communities and volunteers to the fire department and the armed forces. Overall, the logistical processes and disposal flows in the affected areas were closely organized. This coordinated effort, led by regional waste associations, was critical.

The system received additional support from partner companies in Germany and neighboring federal states, which helped with waste disposal. The family business Brantner green solutions in Erpersdorf also provided short-term capacity for shredding and pressing the accumulated bulky waste. Manfred Vogl, managing director of the company, emphasizes the importance of solidarity in such crises in order to quickly find alternative solutions.

Use of resources through waste recycling

The waste recycling plant in Dürnrohr plays a crucial role in the regional energy supply. It generates both electricity and district heating from waste, with one third of the energy being provided for the municipality of Zwentendorf and two thirds for the state capital St. Pölten. In addition, process steam is delivered to AGRANA Starch GmbH. The plant therefore not only functions as a disposal point, but also transforms waste into a valuable source of energy for the region.

These developments are particularly exciting and important because they not only improve waste management in the region, but also make a significant contribution to sustainable energy production. Further reports and details on this topic can be found in an article on www.meinkreis.at.
