Backnang in election fever: Parties are fighting for seats in the local council!

Preparations for the local elections on June 9, 2024 are gaining momentum. The upcoming ÖVP election is causing a stir in Neunkirchen: The list includes 71 candidates, including former mayor Herbert Osterbauer, who resigned due to health reasons. Despite his name on the list, Osterbauer waves it off and emphasizes: “There will definitely be no comeback from me on the local council,” as the NÖN reports.

Meanwhile, the parties' planning in Backnang is also in full swing. The deadline for submitting nominations ends on March 28th. The CDU is the strongest parliamentary group with seven members, and the list has already been drawn up, as parliamentary group leader Ute Ulfert announced. Six of seven city councilors are running again, but there will be changes: Gerhard Ketterer is retiring from the committee after more than 40 years. For the Greens, who currently hold five seats on the local council, the list will be decided on February 9th, although the search for suitable candidates was not easy.

Candidate mix and perspectives

The SPD relies on proven faces like parliamentary group leader Heinz Franke, who is still running for a seat. Among the new names is the well-known ice cream parlor operator Rosa Moriello. Among the new participants in the citizens' forum, a separate list is emerging with Charlotte Klinghoffer and her husband, while the AfD is betting on the dentist Steffen Balz as a possible top candidate. Other voters' associations are also showing interest, and the political competition promises to be exciting, as the Backnanger district newspaper reports.

Interest in council positions is growing and deadlines are getting closer. With a diverse selection of candidates and a wide range of political approaches, it becomes even more important to understand and accept the will of voters. The next few months could be crucial for the political landscape in Neunkirchen and Backnang as the elections approach.
