Emigration from Baden-Württemberg: 26,400 Germans will pack their bags in 2023

In addition to the scenic beauty and cultural diversity, Baden-Württemberg has a serious problem: more and more people are deciding to leave the state and move abroad. According to the State Statistical Office, around 567,000 people from Baden-Württemberg have packed their bags and left their homeland since 2000.

In 2023, around 26,400 Germans from Baden-Württemberg alone moved abroad. This means a significant increase in the number of emigrants compared to previous years, considering that even more emigrants were registered in the years 2007 to 2009 and 2022.

Popular destinations for emigrants

The emigration has not been evenly distributed. Of the 26,400 people who moved out this year, only 15,800 returned to Baden-Württemberg from outside the country. This results in a migration loss of around 10,600 people. In the last 24 years, the state has lost around 136,000 people. Switzerland remains the most popular destination for Baden-Württemberg residents, followed by Austria, France and Spain.

What is particularly striking is that most emigrants move to Switzerland because of its proximity to the border - around 5,100 German citizens have Switzerland as their destination. The figures for Austria are around 1,000 emigrations, followed by France with around 600 and Spain, whose figures are around 500. The 400 people who have found their new residence in the USA are also particularly interesting.

Migration movements in the districts

The problem of migration can be observed in all urban and rural districts. The loss is particularly severe in the districts of Konstanz, Lörrach and Waldshut as well as in the Stuttgart urban district. In the southern Baden districts, emigration is particularly significant towards Switzerland, with over three quarters of the total emigration going in this direction.

Due to various factors, such as professional or family reasons, many emigrants may only stay abroad for a limited period of time. Nevertheless, statistics show that the trend towards emigration from Baden-Württemberg remains stable and could possibly increase further.
