Montenegro in tourist chaos: traffic jams, failures and increasing dissatisfaction!

Tivat, Montenegro - Montenegro is experiencing an unprecedented increase in the tourism sector this year, which now makes up almost 30% of gross domestic product. Nevertheless, those responsible face enormous challenges, since the country's infrastructure cannot keep up with the rapid increase in tourist flows. According to Kosmo , traffic jams, dilapidated roads and chaotic traffic tours are the order of the day. Holidaymakers already report long waiting times at Tivat Airport, which is one of only two airports in the country and is often affected by traffic converts.

In addition to the traffic problems, the beach regions struggle with frequent electricity and water failures as well as sewage problems. These grievances not only endanger the tourist attractiveness, but also the quality of life of the local population. In Tivat, which also suffers from traffic jams in the course of the traffic problems, extensive road work is underway. Road sections such as the 16 km route between JAZ and TIVAT are being renovated, but the progress is left behind the expectations.

infrastructure and traffic projects

The Ministry of Transport emphasizes the progress of motorway and expressway projects, but there is broad criticism of the slow implementation of these infrastructure projects. Over 300 km of state roads are planned for construction and renovation projects this year, including the Matesevo-Andrijevica motorway section and a bypass for Budva. In order to gain investors and promote economic development, a well -functioning infrastructure is indispensable.

However, the challenges do not end with the transport connections. Experts, including Žarko Radulović, co -owner of Montenegro Stars and President of the Montenegrin Tourism Association, warn that the tourism sector is in a severe crisis that intensifies itself from year to year. He reports of a drastically shortened high season and dissatisfaction among the tourists, which is documented by a survey: around 50% of the respondents plan not to return.

increasing challenges in the tourism sector

Radulović describes the current situation as "Russian roulette" and demands urgent measures. An increase in VAT for accommodations from 7% to 15% has additionally burdened the industry. Despite the positive perception of Montenegros compared to Croatia, holidaymakers lose interest due to organizational defects and chaos. The poor management of taxid services and unregulated pedestrian crossings contribute to the negative perception.

Overall, Montenegro has to deal with fundamental structural challenges despite an increasing tourism volume and a high general satisfaction with the beaches and local cuisine. The tourism sector, which has become critical by the crisis, requires a tempo decoration in the upcoming investments to ensure competitiveness. In view of the recommendor in the neighboring country of Albania, Montenegro has to work as soon as possible to restore a stable tourism -friendly environment.

economic developments and EU perspectives

In addition to the challenges in tourism, Montenegro is a pioneer in the EU accession negotiations in the Western Balkans and strives for membership by 2028. Around two thirds of the population support this step. According to gtai , investments of around 380 million euros from the EU growth plan are planned by 2027, but the current political tensions block a ratification.

In the economic outlook, a real economic growth of 3.7 % is predicted for 2025. The state motorway company plans to build 500 kilometers of motorway over the next eight years to improve the connection to European transport networks. Nevertheless, solutions urgently need to be found for sustainable economic development and the removal of the grievances in the tourism sector.
