Völkermarkter Stausee: Sprint regatta inspires with thrilling duels!

On August 17, 2025, the 34th International Sprint Regatta took place at the Völkermarkter Reservoir. This important event attracted numerous participants from the entire Alps-Adriatic region and thus offered an exciting spectacle for rowing enthusiasts. According to reports from Click Carinthia and VK24 The rowers were able to compete on a 500-meter sprint course with six runways, which offered optimal conditions for fair competitions.

The event also included the 12th company regatta, in which eight company teams took part. The winner was the Mahle Lightning team, followed by the Eberndorf youth center in second place and the Wolf Theiss law firm in third place. The guests of honor included mayor Markus Lakounigg, VST chairman Valentin Blaschitz and other important personalities from the region.

Outstanding athletes and exciting competitions

The sprint regatta offered impressive performances, especially from Magdalena Lobnig, who was victorious in the women's single sculls and double sculls with her sister Katharina. Isak Žvegelj from Veslaški Klub Bled from Slovenia was crowned “King of the Lake”, while Magdalena Lobnig received the title “Queen of the Lake”. Young talents such as Nikolaj Wrienz and the sisters Elena and Lisa Schalk were also able to achieve top rankings and were met with great interest.

The atmosphere during the regatta was characterized by exciting races and fair competitions, which was particularly emphasized by section leader Mario Burtscher. Burtscher was enthusiastic about the potential that rowing has and emphasized the importance of such events in promoting the sport in the region.

A weekend full of sporting achievements

On both days, August 16th and 17th, there was not only rowing at the Völkermarkter reservoir, but also a varied supporting program. Live music from Duo Free Fallin and culinary catering from the VST Rowing Section rounded off the event and contributed to the general enthusiasm.

This sprint regatta fits into the context of a variety of rowing competitions that traditionally take place in the region. The Alps-Adriatic rowing event took place in Klagenfurt in April, which was another highlight in the rowing community's calendar with around 600 rowers from Austria, Italy and Slovenia. The high number of participants points to the continuously growing popularity of rowing in the Alps-Adriatic region, as is also shown by the close regional cooperation between the nations.
